Bee City USA logoMatthews: The Fifth Bee City in the Nation
Matthews was designated a Bee City in December 2014, making it just the fifth city to receive the designation. Today, there are nearly 50 Bee Cities.

Bee City USA is a national nonprofit organization that celebrates and raises awareness of the contribution bees and other pollinators make to our world by endorsing a set of commitments, defined in a resolution, for creating sustainable habitats for pollinators.

According to Bee City USA: While more than 80% of flowering plants and one-third of our foods rely on hundreds of thousands of species of insects for pollination, many pollinators are imperiled due to disease, parasites, pesticides, and starvation caused by habitat loss. Together we can reverse this trend. Certified Bee City USA communities galvanize neighborhoods, businesses and municipalities for pollinator conservation. Learn more about the benefits of BEE City USA

Martha Krauss, a beekeeper and former Town Commissioner, and Carol Buie-Jackson, founder of the Matthews HAWK (Habitat and Wildlife Keepers) have been leaders in the effort to earn
Matthews the Bee City designation. They continue their work along with the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resource Advisory Board. To learn more or become involved, please contact Martha Krauss at 704-841-8900 or [email protected]
