Town of Matthews
As a combination department, Matthews Fire & EMS relies on volunteers for both emergency response and non-emergency support. There are several ways you can become a part of our team:

Firefighters & EMT's

These members are the backbone of the department when it comes time to respond to emergencies. While EMT’s must be certified prior to submitting an application, persons seeking to become firefighters are welcome to apply with no prior knowledge or certifications. Volunteers receive some compensation for their service. For more information, contact Heidi Todys, Admin. Asst. or call (704) 708-1214.

Fire Corps/CERT

These organizations, developed by FEMA, exist to allow persons wishing to serve when emergencies occur, but not serving in front-line emergency response. If you are interested in joining either organization, please contact Asst. Chief Peter Williams or call (704) 708-1285.

Explorer Post 911

The Explorers is a division of the Boy Scouts of America (however both females and males are welcome to join) in which students, ages 14 – 18, are exposed to the fire and emergency services and how we operate. Students older than 16 are permitted to begin firefighter training and progress to interior firefighter training upon turning 18. These members are also permitted to ride along on the truck when staffing permits. If you are interested in joining, please contact Asst. Chief Peter Williams or call (704) 708-1285.
